BRING THE TOWER HOME!
By Dave Moorman
So far, this is "vaporware." We
are working on a way to put a CD-ROM
drive on Your Commodore for the lowest
possible price!
It all goes back to Fender Tucker,
who is compiling a CD-ROM of all
LOADSTAR issues to 199. And while this
will be a great boon to any who have a
PC with emulator and CD-ROM drive, it
sort of leaves loyal LOADSTARites out
in the cold! Sure, you can get a CMD
Hard Drive, then attach an external
CD-ROM drive to the SCSI port thereon.
But that is very pricey. And some of
you are still using the brown box and
big 1541 drive you got in 1983! (If
you had bought an IBM clone that year,
you wouldn't be using the same
computer today, would you!)
However, as I mentioned last
month, Nick Copland has "trained" a
PC - any old PC - to be a slave to a
Commodore. All one needs is an X1541
or XE1541 cable and Nick's program:
64HDD. You can do it yourself by
offering to take that old 80386 (or
newer) off your neighbor's hands. Then
get the cable and the software, and
you are ready to rock and roll!
But even that can be too much. So
I am searching for inexpensive PC's to
load up, double check, and send out
ready to plug and play. I wrote to
Nick, and he is interested in the
opportunity. He has a couple of
upgrades to his FreeWare which you
might want. We are also working with
"Joe Forster" in Europe to get the
cables.
The beauty of the LOADSTAR Home
Tower is that it will come loaded with
the LOADSTAR CD-ROM! Now, even at the
excellent prices we have been offering
for back issues, getting 50 issues is
very expensive (about $200). All those
disks and copying do add up! We are
striving to make the LOADSTAR Home
Tower - with CD-ROM, Hard Drive, and
3.5 floppy, packed with the Compleat
LOADSTAR - about $200 (plus S/H).
If you are interested, get ahold
of me. This is an exciting way to keep
the Commodore the Master, and turn the
Proud PC into a lowly [slave]!
